State Debating Finals: Year 11/12

August 8th, 2009 | Debate news | 2 comments

Congratualtions to the Senior team for their stunning performance on Friday at the State Final.

Our team valiantly argued the Negative side of the topic That we should publish school league tables.  It was a close debate, and we had a lot of support from the crowd!  Ultimately the other team won the debate and the Hume-Barbour trophy, but as finalists our team won the English Speaking Union prize, and are now also eligible for the Elite Athletes and Performers Scheme at the University of Sydney (something we did not know, weren’t expecting, and were thrilled to hear!)

What a semi final!!!

The Year 11 team put on a great show today, and although they were (narrowly) defeated by Hornsby Girls High School, the debaters had the audience completely engaged and hanging on to the edge of their seats!

Our team argued the Negative side of the topic:

That we should stop using fossil fuels.

The Affirmative team from Hornsby Girls HS argued that we must stop using all fossil fuels by the year 2020.

Ruth opened our case with clear and concise refutation of the Affirmative team’s arguments.

Vinnie argued ‘to distinction’, ripping apart the opposition’s model with…dare I say it…’aplomb’.

Finally, Jessica brought it home, reviewing the debate’s main issues of timing’ and ‘economic impact’.

It was a close debate, and overall a thrilling debate to watch.  The audience that came along from Mac Fields beamed with pride to watch the best debaters in the school stand their ground and debate with passion and finesse.

Congratulations on a great season Year 11 – now State Semi-Finalists for the second year!

YEAR 11 REGIONAL CHAMPIONS!

CONGRATULATIONS to the Year 11 (A) team, who beat Westfields Sports High School in today’s Premier’s Debating Challenge Regional Final.  We argued the NEGATIVE side of the topic:

That we are over-reacting to climate change.

The team did a great job :)   The team from Westfield’s Sports HS presented strong material, but in the end our case was more closely aligned with the topic, and was more logically argued.

The next debate for this team is the State Semi-Final against Hornsby Girlds High School, at the lovely Botanic Gardens in Sydney.

Year 11 WIN Regional Semi-final!

Congratulations to Year 11 on today’s win :)

The team beat Hurlstone Agricultural HS in an away debate.  Mac Fields was the Negative side of the topic:

That reel violence causes real violence.

Despite some problems with both sides failing to engage with whether something has to be a major factor, or just a contributing factor, before it can be said to “cause” something else (definition debates…who needs ‘em?!), our team pulled up strong for a clear win.

Play of the day: Vinnie’s Lara Croft joke.  Oh how those year 7s laughed!

WELL DONE TEAM!  And best of luck in Friday’s Regional Final against Westfields Sports HS

Week 4 debates – there are TWO

UPDATE

There are three schools in the running to be regional winner in the Year 11 comp – our A team, the A team from Hurlstone, and Westfields Sports High.

Because Westfields SHS won all three of their zone debates, they have been put straight through to the Regional Final.  This means that we play off against Hurlstone for the other spot.  So…

Next week will see us debating Hurlstone sometime early in the week, and if we win against them, we will debate against Westfields SHS (at East Hills Boys HS) on Friday 15th August.  10am prep, 11am debate.

Excited?  I am!

Congratulations to the Year 11 (A) team who defeated the Year 11 (B) team on Tuesday, making them the winners of our Zone.

This team went on to beat Prairiewood High School on Thursday in the inter-zone final.  The topic was:

That women are still second class citizens.

at Prairiewood HS after winning the inter-zone final

Year 11 (A) will now go on to the Regional Final in Week 4.  The team will train against the Year 9 team (who are about to debate in their inter-zone final!) next Tuesday.

Good luck to all our teams in the coming weeks :)
